Often wondered what people find to write about on a blog. Is it like a "dear diary" thing where you write just to get your thoughts & musings in order? Or is the intention that someone somewhere out there will read this- whether or not they know who you are? Maybe that's the attraction- the anonymity of it all. In which case perhaps this will be a good place to collect some of the random thoughts I have on education- its purpose, its possibilities, its current shortcomings. As I help my boys with their homework every afternoon, I often ask myself "why do they need to know this stuff?" When in my everyday life do I ever need to subtract fractions? Why is doing 20 math problems better than doing 10? There are so many things I would prefer to be doing with my children after school than homework, but there simply isn't time. There's so much I want them to learn that they wont find in a school curriculum. The longer I spend in education, the more I question its direction these days. And the more I fantasize about one day becoming their "homeschool" teacher and taking them around the world- to learn language and science and math and history and geography from any primary source that crosses our path.
